As a photographer visiting a new place, it can be challenging to research the best photo spots. Whilst you're not looking to copy existing photographs, it's good to know where best to capture a great view.

Our subject here is Ben A'an, one of Scotland's most popular hill walks. It's a steady, achievable walk that rewards visitors with magnificent views across the Trossachs, including Loch Katrine. Please read our guide to climbing Ben A'an.

Loch Achray Viewpoint

The view pictured on this page is across Loch Achray, towards the distinctive conical-shaped peak of Ben A'an. It is taken from a layby on the A821, Dukes Pass Road that passes the loch. You will see the loch on your right and a large hotel on the left. Before you get to the hotel, the layby is on the right (as pictured above). Pull over and head through a gate into a lochside field.

Photographing Ben A’an

I pass this spot regularly and am often compelled to stop to photograph the view. It's a view that is constantly changing through the seasons and depending on what the weather is doing.

Tigh Mor, Trossachs

Not only is Ben A'an the feature, but the magnificent Tigh Mor, a former hotel, now has timeshare apartments. 'The big house of the Trossachs' is a Victorian building, and Queen Victoria stayed there.

I've used this spot to get some drone photographs, one of which you can see below.

Above the Lochs and Glens hotel, close to the layby, are the peaks of Ben Venue, a higher and longer climb than neighbouring Ben A'an. In a field close by, you could be lucky enough to see Highland Cows, one memorable baking hot day, and I photographed some 'Coos' cooling off in Loch Achray!

Duke’s Pass, The Trossachs

Duke's Pass topped a See Loch Lomond chart of the most scenic drives in Loch Lomond & The Trossachs. So it is worth taking your time driving between Aberfoyle and Callander to stop and photograph the magnificent views. This, though, is my favourite stopping point. Hopefully, it won't get too famous now and be full-up each time I want to stop and take a photograph!
