Bagpiping on The Square Drymen

Summer in Drymen

Each Summer Drymen community stages ‘Bagpiping on the Square’ on Thursday nights during July and August. The event features a one hour piping performance by Strathendrick Pipe Band.

The event is organised by Drymen Community Development Trust, who manage the square on behalf of the community. The community owns Drymen square, one of only two village greens in Scotland.

At 7.30pm The band make a grand entrance, marching onto the village square, whilst playing. Throughout the hour the band leader provides an interesting insight into the workings of the band and updates the audience on how they well they are performing at the official competitions that they enter.

A bucket is passed around, seeking donations to help pay for the event. The Trust donates a total of £1,000 to Strathendrick Pipe Band, this goes towards the costs of uniforms and instruments. They are a teaching band, recruiting many young people so this is a very worthwhile initiative. Any additional funds raised are used to help improve facilities on the square. The Trust have also recently donated money to Drymen in Bloom who do a fantastic job of keeping the square looking so nice.

The event is enjoyed by local residents as well as the many visitors to Drymen. Countries from all over the world are represented and there is always a good atmosphere at the event. People who photograph, or video the event are encouraged to share on-line using #Drymen.

Look out for banners around the village promoting the event and keep up to date on Drymen Community Development Trust’s Facebook page.
